Here’s a video of my guru and I doing a light bharatanatyam piece at the Kolkata to Cairo gallery hop at Arabesque World dance last month.
Bharatanatyam is one of the ancient, classical forms of Indian dance, along with styles like Odissi and Kathak. Styles are regional and sometimes, as in Odissi, the name is indicative of the origin. Bharata-natyam, as I take it, is a word that is descriptive of the components necessary to the dance, emotive, rhythmic, melodic, and of course, motion.
I hope to continue studying this ancient classical dance form and, as always, look to expand my dance knowledge and seek new forms, new dances and new people to learn from, but Phane J Sen will always be my guru of Bharatanatyam and karnatic music.
